This is a question you hear all the time. The answer can change a lot depending on various factors. It all comes down to competitiveness : Lets say you want to get your site #1 on Google Search engine Rank position ( SERP ), it might be hard or easy depending on the competitiveness of the keyword. Would you want to rank no.1 on the keyword “Car”; The odds are near zero. Some companies invest millions to keep the top spots on those income words. But if you want to be no.1 on the word “Purple psychotic Rabbit” then it will be a lot easier since not much people invest time trying to be competitive on that keyword.

So how many back links is enough? That question is completely stupid since its not up to the quantity of back links, but rather to the quality.A site with 10000000 backlinks could be beaten by a site with 50 backlinks. There are many tools that can analyze the back links of your competitors and give you a good idea of what you need to do, and where you need to do it to be able to outrank them on the search engine ranking page( SERP)

1. We are going to check our competitors on Google, for a certain keyword : “dofollow backlinks“.

you can see that Get-free-dofollow-backlinks is 7th position on the SERP for this keyword. His main competitor is Squidoo.com/dofollow. We will take that in note and the other competitors, and go analyse WHY they are ranked higher then I am, and how much backlinks I need to beat them.

My faovirte tool is SEO Spyglass, its a really good tool, even the free version does a good job. So I open SEOsplyglass and add the competitors URL.

3. Find the backlinks of that website

The program will take a look and find all the links pointing towards the site, this takes less then a minute.

On this step you can add many backlink factors you would like to analyze. The more the better and the longer.

5. Analyse the backlinks yourself!

This is a important part, it will make you realize that its not the number of backlinks that count, but the quality. A PR5 backlink can be worth 500 PR1 backlink, so its really not up to HOW many backlinks you need.

I could have 10 000x more backlinks from spam bots on forums and blogs and still be ranked under that page. the PR6 and PR5 backlink and few PR4 is giving that website huge power.
